2016 Karratha to Onslow

Just some photos from my last trip to Onslow.

Started the trip up north to Karratha a 2hr flight. Karratha is 1,526kms north of Perth. Next morning it was an early start for our 3hour, 306km drive south to Onslow.

It was a long day as I had 3 meetings to do on the Wheatstone site, 10an,  2pm and 9pm. In between the 2pm and 9pm meetings I had time to travel to Old Onslow 46kms from the new Town. The Old Town was dismantled and moved in 1925.
Old Onslow was established in 1883. Initially called Ashburton and is in the region which is part  of the Aboriginal Thalanyji tribe, who have occupied the land for thousands of years.

To get to the Old Town you have to drive on a dirt road along the Ashburton River.

It hard to imagine how quiet it was. It was very relaxing.

From the river it was on to the site of the old town. The only buildings surviving are the Police Station, Court House and Old Goal.

The first 3 picture are of the Goal. The 4th is the Police Station and Court.

Other buildings are marked by signs.

Old Onslow had 2 Hotels the Rob Roy and the  Ashburton Hotel. A Rail terminal which had 4 and  1/2 mile (7.2kms) track where the carriages were horse drawn. A Mechanics Institue, Tennis  Courts, a Blacksmiths, an Anglican Church, 2 General Stores and the first Port faculty building built in 1883.

Along the way I also saw hundreds of spinifex Termite mounds.
People thing these are White Ant hills, but the termites are more akin to Cockroaches than ants.

These mounds can be over a hundred years old. Each of these mounds are a colony consisting of a Queen, a King and millions of kids, the majority being workers with 10%soldiers and the remainder Nymphs which grow wings and fly away to start their own Colony.

  1. I enjoyed reading about your North West trip which was informative, interesting and a pleasure to read. The photographs were great too and so well detailed. I learnt a lot about a beautiful landscape and a place I probably will never see personally. Well done and Thanks Les. Hope the meetings went well too
