David was in the navy and posted to Darwin at the time. After their March wedding and then honeymoon in Bali, they moved to Darwin. In August Linda and I travelled up there for Laura’s birthday. Linda also went up for a short visit the following year.
We had a great time the only downside was when we were at Berry Springs whilst in swimming I kicked off from the far side. Shocking pain shot up my leg. I had accidentally kicked hard against an underwater tree root. When I made it to the other side and stepped out of the water my foot was gushing blood.
Warm water and an open wound in Darwin is a recipe for infection. I got the wound cleaned. I think they used peroxide and with a clean dressing headed back to Laura and David’s.
Next morning my leg is double it’s size. Managed to get into a doctor as we were leaving the next day. I was given a penicillin injection. That night when out for dinner I was starting to feel ill, but did not want to spoil our last night.
Next day off to Darwin airport. First stop Alice Springs, beginning to feel a little bit itchy. Next stop Adelaide the itch is getting worse. On the flight from Adelaide to Perth really uncomfortable. I was glad to get home and go to bed.
Woke up in the middle of the night sweating, covered in a deep red rash and could hardly swallow as my throat had swollen to double its size. Linda rushed me to hospital and I was admitted with a penicillin allergic reaction. Ah well a holiday to remember.
